New to GrueWeaver? GrueWeaver Help is a short guide to everything in the app, from your first scene to publishing.

GrueWeaver

What you need. A Mac with macOS 13 Ventura or later, or a PC with Windows 10 (version 1809 or later) or Windows 11. GrueWeaver is in the Mac App Store and the Microsoft Store.

Reporting a problem. Tell us what you did, what you expected and what happened instead, and which version you have (Mac: GrueWeaver > About GrueWeaver; Windows: File > Settings… > About). If you can, attach the story, zipped with File > Export Story Archive… We use what you send only to answer you.

Common questions

I bought GrueWeaver Unlimited. How do I get it back on a new computer, or after reinstalling?

Sign in to the store with the same account, then choose Restore Purchases: on the Mac it is in the GrueWeaver menu, and on Windows in the Help menu. GrueWeaver also checks with the store each time it starts, so it often finds the purchase by itself.

Why does GrueWeaver say my game is too big to publish?

The free version publishes games of up to three scenes. Every scene counts, building interiors included. Your story is never cut down or lost; GrueWeaver Unlimited publishes it at any size.

I double-clicked index.html in my published game and nothing happens.

A published game is a website, and browsers do not run websites from files on your disk. Put it on a web host such as itch.io, or test it on your own computer with a one-line local server, such as python3 -m http.server run in the game's folder.

Where are my stories?

Wherever you saved them. A story is an ordinary folder named after it, holding a .gwstory file you can double-click to open. You can back it up, keep it in a sync folder or put it under git like any other folder.

On the Mac, GrueWeaver asks me to allow access to a folder.

The first time you open a story by double-clicking it, macOS asks once for permission to use the story's folder. Choose the folder it shows and click Allow. GrueWeaver remembers it.

GrueWeaver says a file was changed outside it.

Something else, such as a sync service, git or another editor, changed a file in your story while it was open. GrueWeaver never overwrites that change: it asks which version to keep and saves a copy of the other in your story's .grueweaver/conflicts folder.

Can I sell the games I make?

Yes. There are no royalties and no attribution requirements, whether you made the game with the free version or GrueWeaver Unlimited. The licence that comes with every published game (LICENSE-RUNTIME.txt) has the details.

Refunds.

Purchases are made through Apple or Microsoft, so refunds are too: Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com, Microsoft through your Microsoft account's order history.
